Dr. G. Wright Doyle | Founder & Director

Dr. G. Wright DoyleWright Doyle (Dai De-li) received the B.A. with Honors in Latin from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966; the B.D. (M.Div.) with Honors from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1969; and the Ph.D. in Classics from the University of North Carolina in 1975, with a dissertation on St. Augustine.

After joining OMF International in 1975, he and his wife Dori studied Mandarin Chinese from 1976 to 1978 in Taiwan. Wright taught New Testament, Greek, and Ethics at the China Evangelical Seminary, Taipei, from 1980 to 1988, eventually as Associate Professor.

Since 2004, he has taught courses in New Testament and Systematic Theology for China Evangelical Seminary in Taiwan and in North America, and for China Reformed Theological Seminary in Taipei. Beginning in 2008, he will offer courses for the Chinese program of Reformed Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.

Since 1989, the Doyles have lived in Charlottesville, where Wright serves as Director of China Institute, ministering to Chinese and preparing literature in English for publication in Chinese. He and his wife Dori have one daughter, who was born in Taiwan. She is married to a student at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to speaking in churches and at conferences, Wright also serves as a consultant to individuals and churches with a burden for ministry among Chinese. He has given lectures on Chinese Christianity at the Center for the Study of Christianity in China at Oxford, England, and at the British Library in London (the background of the photo above).

Wright supervised the translation of an abridgment of the Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament into Chinese and made an abridgment of the Chinese edition of Carl Henry’s God, Revelation, & Authority.

Other works composed in English and published in Chinese include New Testament Reference Works; Confucius and Christ; The Switzerland of the New Testament (a popular commentary on Ephesians); Hope Deferred: Studies in Christianity and American Society; and an autobiography.

English publications include The Lord’s Healing Words (available from AuthorHouse; a Chinese edition is scheduled to be published in mid-2008) and numerous book reviews and articles, many of which can be found on this Web site. See the “Books” page of this site for information on how to obtain Wright’s other books in English.

(All speaking honoraria and book royalties go to China Institute.)

Dori Doyle | Helper & Homemaker

Wright is assisted by his wife Dori, who mentors Chinese women, serves as hostess to a steady stream of guests, organizes and goes on trips to Asia, participates on the worship committee and a worship team in our church – all while keeping the house running and putting tasty, healthy meals on the table.

Laura Philbrick | Administrative Assistant

Laura PhilbrickLaura Philbrick comes to us from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where we met through mutual friends.

A professional flute teacher, she returns to Chapel Hill fortnightly to teach six students and to barter lessons (one in return for instruction in karate…).

Her duties as part-time assistant run the entire gamut - processing contributions, answering the telephone, handling correspondence, making travel arrangements, ordering supplies, editing my articles, some bookkeeping, etc.. Since her arrival in June she has been adjusting to a small but quite complex international operation with a variety of ministries. We could not do without her!

Randall Chan, M.Div., and Connie Chan, D.D.S. | Colleages

Randall Chan, M.Div., and Connie Chan, D.D.S., carry on a very creative ministry among Chinese scholars in England. Randall coaches a number of Chinese Christian leaders, and shares the Gospel with the families of the piano students whom Connie teaches each day. Both serve with the international ministry of their church, which draws a number of Chinese students.
